A Slice of CMU Dance: Mapping Communities
BRIEF
Define what a community is and use design research methods to better understand how and why a specific community organizes to fulfill their own needs. Develop a system map which illustrates hierarchy and relationships that structure the CMU Dance community. Understand how the community and its stakeholders develop a consensus of understanding around shared values. Communicate the power dynamics, organizing infrastructure, and motivations of the community.

OVERVIEW
Communities of practice emerge as we seek to connect with like- minded individuals who share similar interests and are driven by similar motivations. Communities are groups of organized individuals who work together to achieve something larger than they could accomplish individually. They are shaped through systems of interaction as facilitated through communication (verbal & non-verbal), shared assets, social practices and cultural relationships. This map identifies and demonstrates the different levels of hierarchy, feedback loops, stakeholders, and interconnectedness of the CMU dance community within the larger dance community of the world.
